Rihanna was being honoured as "Women of the Year Awards" by the US edition of Glamour magazine for her career, fashion sense, charity work and her bravery following her assault by ex-boyfriend Chris Brown.

She took a public stand on domestic violence and speak about the attack because she did not want other women to follow her example of returning to an abusive partner...

"Domestic violence is a big secret."
"The positive thing that has come out of my situation is that people can learn from that.
I want to give as much insight as I can to young women, because I feel like I represent a voice that really isn't heard. Now I can speak for those women..."

The annual "Women of the Year Awards", published by Glamour magazine for the past 20 years and sponsored by L'Oreal, pays tribute to women who have made major contributions to entertainment, business, sport, fashion, science and politics.
